Original SunPower (Maxeon) vs Sunpower Sold In Alaba: Everything Buyers Should Know
If you have shopped for solar panels in Nigeria, especially in Alaba International Market, you have probably come across the name Sunpower, even for inverter batteries.
At first glance, many buyers assume these panels are the same as the famous SunPower solar panels that have been regarded for decades as some of the best-performing premium solar panels in the world.
They are not.
Although the names look identical, they are entirely different products with different origins, different makers, different technologies, different warranties, and different market positions.
Unfortunately, this confusion has caused many Nigerians to believe they are buying the premium American-made solar panels when they are actually buying a different product altogether.
This article explains the differences.
The Original SunPower: A Pioneer in Solar Technology
The original SunPower brand traces its roots to the United States, where SunPower Corporation became famous for producing some of the world's highest-efficiency solar panels that rank with other tier 1 brands like Jinko, Longi, and Aiko.
For years, SunPower has made premium solar technology using its patented Maxeon solar cells, known for exceptional efficiency, very low degradation, excellent heat performance, long lifespan, and industry-leading warranties. Many solar professionals still consider Maxeon cell technology among the best developed for residential solar systems.
Where Does Maxeon Come In?
In 2020, SunPower separated its manufacturing business into a new independent company called Maxeon Solar Technologies, which took over its manufacturing plants, solar panel technology, and others.
Maxeon continued manufacturing panels that were sold under the SunPower name in many markets, many years after the division. Unfortunately, in 2024, the partnership ended after SunPower Corporation declared bankruptcy, leaving Maxeon to continue operating independently as a global solar panel manufacturer.
Today, if someone is talking about SunPower solar panels, they are usually referring to panels manufactured by Maxeon or based on Maxeon's technology.
The "Sunpower" Commonly Sold in Alaba Is Different
The Sunpower brand commonly found in Alaba International Market, Lagos, Nigeria, is not the same company as SunPower Corporation or Maxeon Solar Technologies.
Although this Nigerian version of Sunpower solar panels may serve many Nigerian users well, they should not be mistaken for the internationally recognized SunPower/Maxeon products that originate from the U.S.
While Maxeon's SunPower is known mainly for premium solar panels, you can find the Nigerian SunPower brand on other solar items like batteries, inverters, solar charge controllers, lighting, etc.
And the confusion exists because their names are the same, SunPower (for Maxeon Solar Technologies) and Sunpower commonly seen in Nigerian markets. Most installers and sellers would simply say Sunpower solar panels or Sunpower battery without explaining which one they mean, and buyers would never notice the difference.
How to Tell Them Apart
Here are some ways to differentiate between America's SunPower and the Sunpower in Nigeria.
1. Check the Manufacturer
Original premium panels will clearly identify Maxeon Solar Technologies or legacy SunPower manufacturing information on the product documentation.
If the manufacturer is not Maxeon or the documentation does not clearly identify the manufacturer, you should ask questions before purchasing.
2. Look at the Solar Cells
Original Maxeon panels use distinctive back-contact (IBC) solar cell technology. This means that there are no visible silver grid lines running across the front of the cells, as you would see in many other panels, including the locally marketed SunPower-branded panels, which use the normal cell designs with visible busbars
3. Verify the Model Number
Every genuine premium SunPower/Maxeon panel has a model number that can be matched to an official datasheet.
4. Ask About the Warranty
Maxeon's SunPower offers a whooping 40 years warranty on its solar panels. This is a wide gap compared to the 25 years offered by the locally sold Sunpower and other solar panel brands. However, care should be taken with a warranty based on word of mouth. If the warranty offered is only a seller's promise with no manufacturer's backing, that's a red flag.
Is the Nigerian Sunpower Brand Fake?
Not necessarily. The problem occurs when buyers think they are purchasing the internationally recognized SunPower/Maxeon solar panels. If the locally sold Sunpower is sold as what it is, then it can pass, but if it is sold as a replica of the global brand name, or if the buyer thinks they are buying the internationally recognized brand, then it becomes a fake.
Can You Buy Genuine Maxeon / SunPower Panels in Nigeria?
Yes. Although they are not as common as other brands, genuine Maxeon/SunPower panels can be bought in Nigeria through specialized solar companies or imported on request.
Some Nigerian distributors and engineering companies also special-order premium brands directly from international suppliers rather than stocking them routinely.
Should You Avoid the Sunpower Brand Sold in Nigeria?
Not necessarily. The decision should depend on the solar panel's performance, specifications, warranty, after-sales support, and value for money. Some buyers have used these products successfully for years, while others may prefer globally established manufacturers with longer track records and independently verified performance data.
The key point is buying with accurate information, so that the buyers are truly buying what they think they are buying.
Conclusion
As the Nigerian solar market is growing so fast, so is the number of brands springing up. And these brand names can be misleading.
So before spending hundreds of thousands or even millions of naira on a solar installation, always confirm who actually made the product.
A solar panel labeled Sunpower in Alaba is not automatically the same product as a SunPower/Maxeon panel made in the United States. The Nigerian Sunpower batteries and inverters are also not the same as the U.S. made ones.
Understanding this difference helps you compare products fairly, avoid costly misunderstandings, and invest in the solar system that truly meets your expectations.
In solar, the manufacturer's identity matters just as much as the brand name printed on the panel.
