Why the itel Power Tank, Cola, & Other Solar Generators Won't Last as Long as You Think (Real-World Review)
No doubt, the itel Power Tank is one of the most popular brands of all-in-one solar generators that have taken over the Nigerian solar industry. Its low pricing and massive promotion have made this specific genre of solar system a standard for solar sellers and a go-to for buyers looking for a very affordable and cheap solar energy and backup system.
Most especially, the itel Power Tank (IESS-05K10N), an all-in-one portable solar generator with a 500w inverter capacity, 400w solar input capacity and an inbuilt 1kWh lithium battery, which has appeared in many videos online where it is powering many appliances at once, such as a fridge or freezer, a large standing fan, TV, etc, as with a standard apartment.
Contents like these made them more appealing, I mean, why would you bother installing a solar system of 1.5 million Naira to 4 million Naira when Itel's solar generators of 350,000 to 650,000 Naira can get the job done?
In this guide, we will be explaining why itel's Power Tank, as well as other all-in-one solar generators, will not last as long as promoters claim in real-world usage. We will also analyze the datasheet on the product page on the official website and explain why it might not be widely obtainable in reality. Lastly, we will also reveal some limitations that the manufacturer made clearly public, but many buyers don't seem to understand until they start using it.
The What It Can Carry Vs How Long It Carries It Trap
This is the major trap many buyers fall into after watching the videos on social media showing these mini solar generators carrying common household appliances all at once. The promoters clearly show those appliances running on the Itel Power Tank but will not say how long they will keep running until the battery drains out.
This strategy instantly hooks prospective solar buyers, especially those in dire need of finding a solution to the epileptic power crisis. For example, for the popular itel Power Tank with 500w inverter capacity and 1kwh lithium battery, if the battery is drained to the industry-recommended depth of discharge (DOD) of 80%, it will have 800wh for use.
Now, let's simulate it powering a standard TV of 150w, 3 energy lights of 10w (30w), a standard medium fridge of 180w, and 2 small standing fans of 45w each (90), making a total load of 450w.
If we assume no electrical loss and 100% inverter efficiency, which is not the case in reality, the number of hours the solar generator will power the load will be 800wh divided by 450wh, which is 1.7 hours. That means it will only last for about 1 hour and 42 minutes.
While itel was transparent to a large degree in giving an estimated power rating of basic appliances and runtime hours on their website, many users are not aware of it, or do not understand it, and will make their buying decisions based on adverts from solar installers who show the system powering the home but do not tell the full picture of what to expect in reality.
Sometimes, even when the questions are asked about how long it can power the home, the seller cleverly responds with "you can switch off some appliances to increase runtime hours".
But when you strip out those major appliances such as TV, large fans, and fridge, you take out the advertisement hook from the product, and suddenly, you see those small-sized solar generators for what they were really built for, that is, for small-scale applications like light, small plastic fans, and at most a small to medium-sized TV.
Inverter Durability
While these all-in-one solar generators are shown carrying loads near their maximum capacity, this does harm the inverter component in the long run. Inverters are supposed to carry a continuous load of no more than 70% to at most 80% of their maximum rating.
In our example, as with the viral claims about this type of system, the inverter is carrying 450W, which is at least 90% of its total capacity.
Running these solar generators so close to their maximum capacity will result in a shorter overall lifespan of the inverter component.
Battery Durability
While a lithium battery can support a maximum discharge current of up to 1C, meaning that the total battery capacity can be drained in 1 hour, this practice should be avoided as a regular norm, if you want it to last the maximum number of years in good health.
In many seller exhibitions, as with our example, the load of 450W means that the battery is discharging at around 0.5C. Although this is okay, the best continuous discharge current for maximum longevity should be around 200W to 350W, which represents about 0.2C to 0.4C.
This does not mean you should avoid using it close to its full 500W output capacity when needed. It simply means that if your typical daily load is lower, the battery will generally stay cooler and experience less stress, helping it retain its capacity for more years.
Also, frequent draining and charging up of the battery due to heavy loads uses up the cycle count faster and shortens lifespan.

Solar Charging Limitation
Just like the itel Power Tank 500w and 1kwh battery has a maximum PV input of 400 watts, other similar-sized all-in-one solar generators also have a similar maximum solar power rating.
Now, assuming 100% solar efficiency while it is carrying the same 450w load, it means that the solar power input will not be enough to power the load and charge the batteries at the same time. That is why customers report that the battery level is draining even when there is good sunlight.
This results in the battery remaining low as soon as the sun goes down. Hence, another reason why these types of systems were not supposed to carry the loads that they are advertised to be carrying.
Itel Datasheet vs. Real-World Application
While itel published the typical energy consumption of appliances on its product page, we noticed some items which differ significantly in real world usuage, especially for the average Nigerian household.
While itel based its runtime estimates on a small-sized 50W television, many households use larger TVs that consume more power. Even where smaller TVs are used, they are often older models with higher power consumption or are primarily found in CCTV monitoring and commercial applications. As a result, actual backup time may be shorter than the figures shown in the datasheet.
The actual power consumption of ceiling fans of 45 inches and above can reach as high as 85W, depending on the speed selected. In hot climates like Nigeria, where these solar generators are heavily advertised, a 50W rating for a ceiling fan is not ideal, as most homes use the highest level.
Most microwaves and electric kettles draw about 1000W of power as against the 500W published.
Conclusion
Small all-in-one solar generators in the 500W inverter / 1kWh lithium battery category, such as the itel Power Tank IESS-05K10N, Cola 1000, 1000 Pro and 1000 Plus, POWMr 500W, Anern Portable ESS, Sako Portable Power Station, and similar products are good entry-level solar backup solutions because of their affordability, portability, and ease of installation. However, they were never designed to function as full home solar systems or to continuously power multiple high-wattage household appliances for long periods.
To maximize their lifespan, keep your normal daily load well below their maximum output, avoid frequent deep discharges, and reserve near-full-capacity operation for occasional situations rather than everyday use. This reduces stress on both the inverter and the lithium battery, helping the system deliver more years of reliable service.
Before buying any portable solar generator, don't focus only on what it can carry, also pay close attention to how long it can carry that load. Understanding both the power (watts) and the energy capacity (watt-hours) is the key to choosing a system that matches your actual needs and avoiding disappointment after purchase.
